Sometimes it’s best just to put the colour on and see what happens.  This is quite a big acrylic that was fun to paint. When the cool spring sun shines on the Moray coast, things can get pretty vivid.

Eider Ducks - original gouache

I remember watching eiders even as a small child. They are the very essence of our coastal birdlife and I’m very fond of them. Against the glitter of the sea, the drab female eider seems to give little away, compared to the showy males. And you seldom can close enough to see the sage green on the neck (never mind the salmon pink). These were swimming off the rocks at Hopeman on the Moray Firth but, again, they are around in plenty of other places on the Scottish coasts.

Ringed Plovers

These birds always strike me as a little forlorn – just little scraps of feathered life on bare shores and shingle. The inspiration for these in particular, as it happens, were birds on the shore near Rattray, by the RSPB reserve at the Loch of Strathbeg, but ringed plovers are fairly well distributed round Scotland's coasts - at least in the quieter places.

On that day in February, the top of Ben Ledi was a sheet of ice and snow and I was glad to duck down by the west-facing slopes. This is one of Scotland’s best-known and popular hill-days, even in winter.
